The Book Is the Present. The Time to Read It Is the Gift.

A book is a wonderful gift, but for many people the hardest part isn’t choosing one. It’s finding the time to actually read it.

That’s why I’ve now updated my printed editions of No, I Won’t Buy You a Drink! so that, moving forward, the first page inside the front cover includes an Eight Guilt-Free Hours certificate.

The idea is simple. The book is the present, and the certificate gives the recipient permission to put everything else aside and enjoy it.

It can be used when giving my book to your dad for Father’s Day, to a partner for their birthday, to a friend at Christmas, or simply to someone you know who never seems to find time to read.

The certificate isn’t limited to my book, either. If you’ve chosen a different book that you know they’ll enjoy, you can create your own Eight Guilt-Free Hours gift around it. The book doesn’t need to be mine. The important part is giving them the time to enjoy the book you’ve chosen.

And there’s no reason the gift has to come from someone else. Most books are bought for ourselves, so you can make the same promise to yourself. Dedicate eight hours to a book you’ve been meaning to read and give yourself permission to enjoy it without feeling guilty about everything else you could be doing.

For a partner giving it to Dad, that might mean taking care of the children for the day. For someone else, it might mean taking care of the jobs that would normally fill their weekend. For yourself, it might simply mean deciding that those eight hours belong to you.

Eight hours might be enough to finish a book, or simply enough to make a start without feeling guilty about everything else that could be done.

The book is the present. The time to read it is the gift.
